Aug 3 – Hanging on to Hope                                        Kurt Kalas

In my experience, Hope is slippery. One minute you have a firm grasp on it and are ready to change the world. The next minute it slips away and you feel like hiding under the bed for a month or two. That's where people come in, because on good days we can give Hope to each other.

August 10        Movement is Life is Movement                                                                     Pat Hofmann and Stacey Recht

Our hearts beat, our blood flows, our lungs expand and our breath flows. We are in motion even when we are still. Moshe Feldenkrais said “Movement is Life."  Eugen Sandow said “Life is movement”. Once you stop moving, you're dead. Choose life.

Join us for our annual movement service and try out some new moves, including meditation, yoga, theater games and tai chi with special guest Sifu Vernon Williams.

Second Sunday collection for UNRWA
UNRWA, the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Near East, is a UN agency that provides humanitarian and development assistance to Palestinian refugees. Established in 1949, UNRWA's mandate includes providing services like education, healthcare, and relief and social services to registered Palestinian refugees and their descendants.

Aug 24- Poetry and Music                                          Greg Lawler

This is the annual service where members and friends share their favorite poem or story (original or something that is just meaningful to them) and their musical talents.  The BUC choir will present a couple of songs but there will be solos and small group performances as well.  All are invited to be part of this, but you must sign up ahead of time by contacting Greg (glawler@uchicago.edu).

Aug 31- Labor and Social Justice                             Michael Wolf

We examine the role of the labor movement in the fight for social justice.  It is a complicated story: on the one hand, auto workers marching with Martin Luther King for jobs and civil rights, on the other hand workers in California attacking immigrant Chinese workers in the late 1800's.    The basic message: if the labor movement does not stand against the worst outrages against immigrants, Palestinians and others committed by our government, we lose our souls and we lose the fight.
