We hold our church to be without creed, and are proud of the extent
to which our congregation includes a mix of believers (of different
types), skeptics, and nonbelievers. Not only do we embrace them all,
but we try to share our beliefs and to feed each and every one in a
spiritual-ish way. We purport that working through life’s biggest
questions is something we all need in order to thrive, and in our case,
we do this best in church.

Our denomination has proposed to change the language we use in
order to describe ourselves. The process involves amending a section
of the UUA By-Laws, which we require ourselves to consider on a
regular basis. The proposed amendments will be voted on at this
summer’s General Assembly, and they represent a major change.
Notably, this includes replacing the familiar Seven Principles and
Sources with a statement of values. Understandably, there are strong
feelings about this, and we want Beverly Unitarian to have a chance
to weigh in. In this sermon, I will try to state the proposed change
and describe some of the feelings I have heard expressed. I will also
try to unpack this proposal from some other political currents that
are active in the national UU discussion.
This sermon serves as the “kick-off” for a series of discussions at
BUC about the proposed Article II amendment.

While essential to pay attention to blessings which lift our hearts and remind us of the good, it is also necessary to make space for loss and pain. When buried, these can inhibit our ability to love and share. This service will explore the relationship between gratitude and grief and the opportunities for transformation which come from opening to the whole of life.

Guest Speaker Bio – The Rev Pamela Rumancik is poet, native plant enthusiast and long-time tree-hugger.  Her spiritual roots reach back to Catholicism, and she is an initiate into the Ruhaniat Sufi tradition. These liturgical origins inform her love of the arts as a vehicle for experiencing the holy otherness of life. Pam’s deepest commitments are to remembering the divine in each being and finding ways to open conversation with folks who see the world differently. Originally from Lorain, Ohio, she is the mother of three grown children and the wife of Rev Karen Mooney. Pam and Karen live in Bull Valley, Il, share their home with two golden doodles and spend a lot of time working in their garden.

Second Sunday offering for immigrant assistance.  Make checks payable to BUC.  Please use check MEMO to direct your contribution.
