July 7, 2024July 7 – An Old-fashioned Hymn Sing Greg Lawler
There is a tradition in many religious groups to meet and sing. We will try this on the Fourth of July weekend focusing on hymns from the hymnals, and maybe some other things. You are invited to explain why a particular hymn is important to you. If you want to make sure your favorite(s) are included, contact me ahead of time!
Plan to stay after church this Sunday, July 7, for an ice cream treat sponsored by the Membership Committee.
We'll be meeting in person AND streaming live on Zoom.

July 14, 2024That Which is Indestructible in Us Emma Farrell
Identities - whether we adopt them for ourselves or they are foisted upon us, these labels help us define, for ourselves and others, how we move through the world. What happens when we have to change one of these labels; what remains of our identities?
Second Sunday offering for migrant support. Please use check memo line.Guest Speaker Bio- Dr. Emma K. Farrell is a seminarian at Meadville Lombard Theological School.
Prior to heeding the call to ministry, they worked in academia as a biochemistry researcher, taught at several universities, and worked in the private sector as an analytical chemist. Emma has published professionally in several related fields, including metabolomics, enzymology, and education, but consistently found the most meaningful parts of their jobs to be the relational ones. Emma has practiced building community in six major metropolitan areas where they’ve lived, and now devotes their life to building beloved community and dismantling the legacy burdens of white supremacy culture to make room for nurturance, mutuality, and alterity.
In their personal life, Emma identifies as a queer, neurodivergent solo polyamorist whose theological leanings are religious naturalist and Buddhist. Emma has two young children, enjoys blues dancing, and consumes books. We'll be meeting in person AND streaming live on Zoom.

July 28, 2024Advocacy: Stick up for Yourself, for Others, and for our Values Rev. Allen and Kate Holt
How do we make our values come alive, and work to make them visible in the larger world around us? Often, the frustrating part of caring is realizing that change is hard and, too often, elusive. But sometimes change can happen. Rev. Allen is inspired by new member Kate Holt. After her then employer, the City of Springfield, refused to support her request to get health insurance benefits for transgender care, Kate and the ACLU decided to challenge the position that felt
unfair and discriminatory. The Illinois Human Rights Commission took this case and set precedent by claiming that exclusion of gender-affirming care from employee insurance plans violates Illinois civil rights law, including protections for sex and gender identity. Policy was changed in Springfield, and barriers to this potentially life-saving care are being removed in other jurisdictions as a result. We all can be inspired by knowing that sometimes, goodness does prevail.
Fourth Sunday offering for migrant support. Please use check memo line. We'll be meeting in person AND streaming live on Zoom.
