Ingathering Service                                                          Rev. Allen Harden

We begin this new church year by gathering and sharing waters from disparate sources, uniting them in one common bowl. If you collected water, please bring it and you are invited to speak briefly to name what it represents for you. If you have no water, we will provide, and you can transform it to metaphorically represent whatever you wish. Rev. Allen will speak briefly on our shared church community, our aspirations, the values and principles we hold close. And how we can bring these all to life in the coming year.

How I was made                                                                                                Jacob Furst

 It turns out that sometimes, the writing of a sermon becomes the sermon.  Join me as I share some lessons I learned while preparing for today about who (and why) I am. You just might find that those lessons apply to all of us.

UU PMI  (UU Prison Ministry of Illinois) equips UU's in Illinois to ​transform institutions, partnering with and supporting people harmed by the prison industrial complex. Their work includes providing liberal religious ministry to incarcerated people, advocating for policy changes, and teaching radical hospitality to congregations welcoming recently incarcerated individuals. Guest Speaker Bio – Jacob Furst is a professor of computer science at DePaul University, an enthusiastic amateur singer, part-time lay preacher, bare foot runner, spouse and father of three children.  He believes that Beverly Unitarian makes the world a better place.

Claiming our own Narrative                                           Rev. Allen Harden

Public discourse has, for the most part, become a cacophony of discord and a whole dump of negative. Bad news, fake news, casting of blame, demeaning the other. While we need to observe and deal with the insanity that abounds, we do not have to accept any of it as the storyline of our times. We can dream of a nicer and kinder world, and we can imagine an order based on justice and righteousness. If we hold these aspirations before us, and speak of living into them, then we can begin to reframe the narrative based on our own values and concerns. One step at a time, always towards goodness, can catalyze transformation.

Supporting the Recovering                                 Christopher Zimowski
Recovery month is all about supporting people in recovery and lifting the stigma of addiction and mental health. I plan to focus on the role that community has in a person’s journey when recovering. I will also touch on how recovery can be about redemption and second chances.
