Allen, and BUC kids This year, Earth Day was sort of preempted by Easter and Passover, so this is our (albeit late) Earth Day Service. We acknowledge that we can pay attention to our earth and the environments around us at any time. This service will engage with the interdependence between humanity and nature, and try to demonstrate how the world around us can bring beauty and magic into our lives, as well as teach us much about important skills like cooperation and resilience. And if you have never hugged a tree, this might be your chance to do so. We'll be meeting in person AND streaming live on Zoom. It tells the previously untold story of Waitstill and Martha Sharp, a Unitarian minister and his wife from Wellesley, Massachusetts, who left their children behind in the care of their parish and boldly committed to a life-threatening mission in Europe. Over two dangerous years they helped to save scores of imperiled Jews and refugees fleeing Nazi occupation across Europe. At a time when most Americans were turning a blind eye to the growing social injustice and totalitarian threat in Europe, the Unitarian Universalist Association—alerted to the dire situation by their fellow congregation in Prague—was committed to saving as many people as possible. With narration taken completely from the couple’s journals, Defying the Nazis: The Sharps’ War combines the intrigue of a spy novel with an intimate look into the lives of a husband and wife who were willing to put the well-being of strangers before that of themselves and their family. This is a question that is now being addressed with unfortunate frequency in America, as many institutions and persons find themselves engaged in existential struggle with our own government. We will also reflect on responses to the film “Defying the Nazis: The Sharps’ War”, a film screened here by Rev. Allen the previous evening. (Sat 6/14, 7:00 pm). Allen Harden This service is followed by the annual meeting of Beverly Unitarian Church, when we will elect some new leaders and approve a budget for the coming year, among other things. A good time to reflect on our identity, our purpose, and the nature of our soul as a religious body. We will also hold a ceremony to welcome new members into our congregation.
