Trick or Treat for UNICEF

It's a Beverly Unitarian Church tradition that our children Trick or Treat for UNICEF on the Sunday before Halloween. Normally, all the kids show up in costume and head for 103rd & Longwood Drive to solicit Starbucks and CVS shoppers and every passer by they spot, shaking their little orange boxes for donations. This year was different; only three young people showed up (Carolyn Wilbon, Teddy Bernard as Rocky, Gavin Cottrill as the dice and our Religious Education Director, Amanda Price, the OWL. Undaunted, they headed down the hill and had a very fun and lucrative morning. Thank you, generous donors, and of course, our determined children and their fearless leader.  Visit our Facebook page to see them in action.

FUNdraiser ~ Annual Christmas Tree Sale

Four Day Christmas Tree Sale ~ Dec. 2-3 & 9-10.  The sale of 100 Castle trees begins on Saturday, Dec 2nd and ends when all the trees are gone. We sell out early every year and we don't want anyone disappointed so shopping for your tree asap is a very good idea. Invite a friend to join you for this annual feel-good BUC fundraiser.

Women of the Castle Receive Award

Every year, A New Direction (AND) bestows an award upon a partner who helps them fulfill their mission of providing domestic violence services, which include legal advocacy, children's therapy, and domestic violence education. At Ridge Country Club on Saturday, October 22, 2016, at AND's annual fundraiser, the Women of the Castle were recognized for their "steadfast support of A New Direction over the years." The Beverly Unitarian Church is proud to support the work of those who improve the lives of women and children and we are proud to have our longest member, Mary Sparks, accept the award. Mary is a lifelong supporter of women and issues around women's rights.

BUC to Host "Siberia Souls" Exhibit

Friday, Sept. 16 through Monday, Oct. 10, BUC will host “Siberia Souls,” an exhibition of LED light sculptures created by artist, neuroscientist and friend of our congregation Audrius “Andy” Plioplys. The exhibit arose out of Andy’s work on the Hope and Spirit project at the Balzekas Museum of Lithuanian Culture in Chicago, which marked the 70-year anniversary of the mass deportations to Siberia by Stalin and commemorated the victims of these atrocities. Four of Andy’s blood relatives died during NKVD interrogations, and eight were deported to Siberia. In the creation of Hope and Spirit, over 400 letters and photographs sent from Siberia were found and saved from oblivion.
Andy writes,
"In the LED light sculptures I incorporate these photographs and letters. If we remember departed individuals, in a sense they remain immortal. Memories are stored in neural networks in our brains. The photographic images appear from under layers of my own neural networks, brain scan images, and brain wave tracings.

The primary purpose of this project was to inform the general public of these events and the deaths of millions of innocent people. If history is forgotten, it will repeat itself. Recent events indicate that my concerns were indeed prophetic. History is repeating itself."

BUC will show seven light sculptures and four color prints. The rest of the works in the series will be on display concurrently at ArtPrize in Grand Rapids, Michigan. This is the world’s largest competitive art exhibit, taking over the entire city for a month. This sequence is being premiered at Fountain Street Church in an exhibit concerning social justice and is co-sponsored by the American Civil Liberties Union.

The exhibit will kick off with an opening and artist lecture on Friday, Sept. 16 from 7 to 9 PM. The church will be open for drop-in viewing hours on Saturdays from 10 AM to 2 PM and Sundays from 12-2 PM. In addition, “Siberia Souls” will be featured as part of the Beverly Art Walk, Saturday, Oct. 1 from 12-7 PM.
