BUC is joining with other UU congregations in the Central Midwest District in a project on homelessness called "No More Turning Away." Anyone interested can volunteer as a group at the PADS location at Pilgrim Faith UCC Church near 95th and Cicero on the fifth Thursday of each month. Our first date will be Thursday, October 30. Children are welcome, too, if accompanied by a parent or guardian. Please contact Marcia Curtis at (312) 431-0381 or RevMyoshin@msn.com if you are interested in participating! ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- At the September Board meeting a new special collections policy was adopted that establishes the second Sunday of each month as Special Collections Sunday. On these Sundays, all cash and any checks not designated as a pledge will go to the organization designated to benefit from the special collection. Checks are to be made payable to Beverly Unitarian Church, and it is recommended that individuals write "special collection" in the note section. The Social Action and Denominational Affairs Committee has designated the Unitarian Universalist Service Committee (UUSC) as the beneficiary of the special collections on the second Sundays of October, November and December. The UUSC's focus areas are: 1) defending civil liberties and access to democratic processes, 2) advancing economic justice, 3) promoting environmental justice, and 4) protecting rights in humanitarian crises. Throughout the U.S. and around the world, the UUSC develops partnerships with organized, effective and transparently-run grassroots organizations of people who courageously confront and challenge oppression and inequality. While the UUSC provides financial and other assistance to its partners, the partner's experience and expertise in turn enriches the UUSC, enhancing the ability of the UUSC to advocate for common goals. One of the UUSC's current campaigns is Drumbeat for Darfur, which raises the decibel level of voices urging the U.S. government and other influential institutions to make ending the genocide in Darfur one of its highest priorities. Another major campaign involves working with partners on the Gulf Coast to achieve equitable recovery for the people of that region. The UUSC also organizes short-term JustWorks camps – projects that help volunteers examine and understand the root causes and damaging effects of injustice while contributing their labor to projects that assist partner organizations. We hope that everyone will help the UUSC with contributions in October, November and December.
