BUC Spotlight

Waste High with Electronics and Chemicals

The March 6th Household Hazardous Waste Collection service was a rousing success. At least 125 cars dropped off paint, chemicals, batteries, TVs, appliances and electronics. We filled up a 10 foot long U-Haul, a pick up truck and ten palletized boxes. Many, many thanks go out to the BUC people who helped out:  Candace & Christian, Josh, Betsy, Beth, Lloyd, Sam & Susan, Bethany, Adrian, Jean, Char, Allan, Lyle and Fran.

Mucho Gracias to Beverly Bank & Trust and Alderman Ginger Rugai, whose financial support made this event a lot more gratifying. The Green Sanctuary Group is using the funds collected from donations for dropping off waste to finance TreeKeeper scholarships, worship service speakers, the electric charging station, educational forums and a trip to GA this June.  We hope to involve more congregations in the future so that more residents are able to take advantage of this service.

MONDAY January 16, 2017 Martin Luther King Faith in Action Assembly

In 2015, our church voted to join forces with the Community Renewal Society (CRS), an organization that began in 1882 in Chicago. Little did we know when we voted, that this partnership would bring more to us than what we had to offer them. CRS is calling on us to show up and participate at St. Mark United Methodist Church, 8441 S. St. Lawrence Ave. from 9 AM until Noon, Carpool from the church leaves at 8AM
If you can, join in for lunch together at Thomas' Restaurant to support a local business.
See the attached flyer or see more on Facebook.
Here is a snapshot of who CRS is:

CRS's Mission
Community Renewal Society (CRS) is a faith-based organization that works with people and communities to address racism and poverty. CRS transforms society towards greater justice and compassion.

Vision
A just community where race and class no longer limit each person's full participation in all aspects of society.

Theory of Change
Community Renewal Society's theory of change connects four primary components - public engagement, public will/opinion, civic demand and public policy/practice change - in efforts to empower persons of color and low-income individuals to transform their lives and circumstances and the conditions of their communities.

You can see why BUC aligns itself with the CRS’s work. Please visit their website to be more informed about the problem issues that CRS is working on this year.
