In the Pulpit: Ministerial Intern Julia Jones
Sermon: "The Lessons of Winter"
Late January holds little question about what season we are enduring. The slog of winter has a relentless brutality that has left us buttoned, zipped, chilled, and likely a little weary of the whole thing. What can winter teach us that we still want to learn? Perspectives from earth-centered religions, from science, and from Henry David Thoreau suggest that even now, The Lessons of Winter life is actively being born. What role will we play?

BUC Spotlight
New Film Series at BUC Starts November 19
Starting Friday, Nov 19, BUC begins an adult education film series that specifically deals with moral or religious themes. The first film is from 1928: La Passion de Jeanne d'Arc - (82 min.) Considered director Carl Theodor Dreyer's finest achievement and one of the greatest movies of all time, this stunning emotional drama recounts the events surrounding Joan of Arc's 1431 heresy trial, burning at the stake and subsequent martyrdom. The discussion following the film will be an examination of personal integrity, vision of faith and its social consequences.

Movie: Blue Gold
Friday November 5th, 7:00pm at BUC: BLUE GOLD (movie)
Narrated by Malcolm McDowell, this award-winning documentary posits that we're moving closer to a world in which the scramble for water, an increasingly precious commodity, could actually incite war. Ninety minutes (film) followed by discussion of questions such as Should the supply of water be handled by private companies? Do we pay too little for water in Chicago? Should we allow other states or other nations to export water from the Great Lakes? Is water worth fighting a war over and what might prevent that from happening?
