Topic “Castle Restoration”

Castlekeeper Challenges

Chicago's only castle, icon of the Beverly neighborhood and home of the Beverly Unitarian Church, has two cracks in its main turret! It all started with the window washing of the castle windows. Once on the roof for a better perch to tackle the third story windows, two huge cracks running down the length of the castle's turret were impossible not to notice. The area between the cracks was beginning to bulge and the leaders of the church knew they had to act fast.

A short term solution will happen this week when a contractor, familiar with such problems, will place a steel band as a short term "band aid" solution that will only last for about two years, enough time to research what it will take to correct the situation for the long term.

The castlekeepers are feeling a sense of urgency and hope that with support, the undesirable solution of removing the turrets altogether, won't have to happen. Church leaders are beginning to organize a restoration task force/committee of local and larger Chicagoland people who are both interested and knowledgeable. Such a group could inform the church community on how best to proceed towards a long term solution and feasible ways to fund the endeavor.
